What is Antifreeze?

The service team at Tanner Nissan often answers questions like “is antifreeze coolant?” Some people use these terms interchangeably, but coolant is technically a mixture of antifreeze and water. The most common ratio of these two is 50/50, but you can get more potent and more expensive coolant options that are 70% antifreeze and 30% water. Some think that antifreeze and coolant achieve opposite results, but both help to regulate your engine’s temperature as you drive.

Typically, you’ll find that antifreeze is composed of ethylene glycol or propylene glycol. It’s typically green, pink, or orange in color depending on what purpose it’s supposed to serve. Most vehicles take green antifreeze, but you should take a look at your owner’s manual to make sure you’ve got the right color for your model.
