What is Coolant?

First things first: what is coolant? Coolant is a mixture of antifreeze and water that keeps your engine from overheating or freezing. The coolant mixture circulates the system to absorb the mechanical heat (friction) produced as your engine runs throughout Aitkin. It’s ability to maintain proper and safe operating temperatures means it is an incredibly important part of your car’s health.

How to Check Coolant Levels

Since we’ve established how essential coolant is to your Nissan, let’s cover how to check coolant level and quality. The following tips will help you inspect your coolant to ensure its optimal condition, and thus your vehicle’s premier performance.

  • Pop the hood of your Nissan
  • While the vehicle cools down, refer to your owner’s manual to properly locate the coolant reservoir
  • Once identified, look closely at the coolant reservoir and you’ll see the marks denoting the upper and lower coolant levels
  • Ensure that the current coolant level is in between those marks
  • If the coolant level is low, add the type of coolant specified in your owner’s manual to the reservoir. Check to see if the coolant is pre-diluted or concentrated. If concentrated, be sure to create a proper 50/50 mix of antifreeze to distilled water.
  • While you’re checking the coolant level, check its color and quality too. Any perceived discoloration or contaminants may warrant a coolant flush.
